18.0" Largemouth Bass caught by Willard Gage @ Watershed Tackle fishing on Saturday November 03, 2012 at 00:00 near Walled Lake in Oakland County, Michigan (MI), United States North America using a 4inch junebug ripple shad a Swimbait by Berkley

Fished for 4 full hours on Walled Lake Saturday afternoon. The water temperature dropped to 46 F. The fish were very scattered and nto really on a specific bait, as long as it was dark in color. However, I was able to scratch a fish about every thirty minutes, slower action than I would like but with the high pressure after the storm that went through and the extremely cold water I guess I can’t complain.

I caught 4 Largemouth Bass (largest full size on next post) and 3 northern pike (largest shown full size here).

Bass were 12-18 inches and the pike were between 18-22 inches.

The long casts are definitely paying off in strikes as they are allowing me to cover a large amount of water. The fish were so scattered that I even used an old trick of mine from when I was a teenager by making a long cast and “walk trolling”. I would just cast as far as possible and walk at a steady pace with the spinner while slowly reeling. I was able to pick up an additional pike and bass this way while walking back to my car..

1 of 3 pike were caught on ¼ oz black roostertails with silver blade and 1 on the junebug Berkley rippleshad and scrounger head and one on a 4inch natural Berkley powerworm.

I have been re-reading Ned Kehde’s articles and blog and I was able to catch 1/ 4 bass and 1 /4 pike on a jig and stick worm ( 4 inch Berkley natural powerworm).

Since I have yet to optimize baitcasting with braid (see my earlier posts) I picked up a 9 ft medium action daiwa Acculite spinning rod to throw the ripple shad. I was able to make solid hooksets on 2/4 bass which just completely inhaled the 4 ½ inches of bait and jighead.
