18.0" Largemouth Bass caught by Willard Gage @ Watershed Tackle fishing on Sunday October 28, 2012 at 00:00 near Walled Lake in Oakland County, Michigan (MI), United States North America using a Berkley worm or ripple shad in black a Swimbait by Berkley

Fished for three hours on Walled Lake Sunday afternoon before the storm “Sandra” made landfall on the East coast (hope you guys and your families all made it safely out East). The water temperature dropped to 52 F and the wind was blowing a steady 20+mph straight out of the North. I was able to position myself to cast with the wind and make some monster casts using a 10 ft long ultralight steelhead spinning rod and 8lb nanofil. I have been thinking of this more like surf fishing rather than normal freshwater fishing. The weeds are down and as Biil Greenwald has said the gamefish are moving further offshore.

I caught 2 Largemouth Bass (largest shown here) and 10 northern pike (shown on next two posts). I literally did ntogo more the 20 minutes without landing a fish.

Bass were 12-16 inches and the pike were between 18-24 inches.

The long casts are definitely paying off in strikes, and with the weeds down due to the cold water, I had no problem getting the hooks to stay in the pike.

All pike were caught on 3/8 oz white or black roostertails with silver blade or Berkley .

I have been re-reading Ned Kehde’s articles and blog and I will be changing over to the jig and stick worm for bass in the cold water. The difference I will make in my technique is using the 10ft spinning rod to gain casting distance – the longer the cast, the longer the bait is in the water and less time in the air! I also picked up a medium action 9ft steelhead rod rated to ¾ oz so I can throw the swimbait or even a slow rolled spinner for the pike later into the year. My plan this year is to fish at least once a week until ice-up – no matter how cold.
