24.0" Northern Pike caught by Willard Gage @ Watershed Tackle fishing on Saturday October 06, 2012 at 00:00 near Walled Lake in Oakland County, Michigan (MI), United States North America using a 4 inch black ripple shad on 3/8 oz scrounger jig a Swimbait by Berkley

Fished for two hours on Walled Lake Saturday evening. The water temperature now at 58-60 F after a bit of rain and due to cold fronts passing through. Wind basically out of north about 10-15 mph. This was not an easy fishing trip due to the wind. I had to position myself to make casts relative to the cover based on the wind direction, not optimum casting & retrieve angle.

I caught 3 Largemouth Bass (next two posts) and 2 northern pike (shown here). Bass were 13-18 inches and the pike were both about 24 inches. The long casts were difficult to make with a spinner, so I went to the spinning rod.

All but one fish were caught on a 4 inch black ripple shad on 3/8 oz scrounger jig. I have not had confidence in using any size swim baits but, I had to change lures due to the wind and the fact that I thought this combination would work better at a slower retrieve in the lake. I was very happy with the results as it seems the size of my catch went up. I do not think that is entirely due to the size of bait, more the retrieve speed, but I am gaining confidence in this style of bait. I will say that I think the fish would not have taken the spinner on this trip so the decision to change really did pay off.

i use an 8 to 12 inch steel leader in all the lakes here. i even started tying my dropshots for bass with tieable 18# wire because i catch a lot of pike on 4 inch powerworms too!
