Chain Pickerel caught by Joe Brown fishing on Friday July 13, 2012 at 18:00 near Denville in Morris County, New Jersey (NJ), United States North America

Saw this little baby pickerel hiding in the rocks. It was too hot so it couldn't be bothered to move. I'm guessing it was a chain, but I have plucked some small redfins out of here in the past.

The Rockaway River empties into the Boonton Resevoir a few miles away. I suppose its possible there's some pike in there. The resevoir is closed to fishing.

I still say it is hard to confirm as a Redfin. Juvenile Northern Pike have similar bars as do Tiger Muskies. I have seen many juvenile Redfin caught in nets around here, and I catch them on my line too, and their upper bodies have more solid coloration with stripes far less pronounced. After looking at lots of photos on line, I am going to change my vote and say it looks closest to being a baby Northern Pike. Is that river connected to the Passaic by chance? Is there a lake at its headwaters?

Insanely slick photo...I've tried many similar trout shots to no avail.

Hmm, I was unsure about the species, but I don't think there are any pike or musky in that river. I could be wrong. I've only caught pickerel around there, so I just assumed.

Hmmm, could also be a young Tiger Musky. The bars don;t look like redfin or chain bars.

Nice photo Joe! I think it is a redfin. This will drive Brian Shea nuts! He has been trying, to add this elusive creature to his catch list (100) species, for years.
