Yes, that was me that joined. Thanks for the advice - I also read your posts on BAG, which have been really helpful. I look forward to making it out with the group some time soon.

Any time. We have a good club of anglers here in the Triangle, mostly interested in Bowfin, but happy to catch most anything. Was that you I saw joined today?

As for tips, I recommend just getting out on the water with us. Handling Bowfin is best learned by practice with veterans, however, a few basic tips to keep in mind:

a) use braided line. It doesn;t stretch, so it provides a better penetration when you set a hook into a bowfin's bony mouth.
b) use good hooks. Bowfin straighten light or cheap hooks because they fight so damn hard.
c) do not stick your hand in a Bowfin's mouth without a glove. Their teeth aren;t sharp/serrated like a pike, but pointy like a dog. The puncture wound can hurt or get infected. besides, it hurts, even if they don;t break skin, because of their powerful jaw strength, which is like a bear trap.
d) don't rush to get the fish back in the water. they can survive out of water for a long time, so take your time handling the fish.
e) the most important tip of all: when you fight a big Bowfin, hold on and enjoy the ride!

I think it's either a creek chub or a river chub (I actually think it's the latter, but that wasn't an option on this site). Water was really cold, and there was virtually no fight -- I was just happy to bring something to hand. Fat and healthy fish, though. I should have taken a shot from head on to show the girth...
